Wildlife Spotting: Peacocks

Despite the fact that Holland Park is considered to be West-London’s most peaceful park, for an embarrassingly long time I didn’t even realise it’s there. Then one weekend I decided to explore a park I haven’t been to before, and that was the moment when I caught a glimpse of a small green area on the map, right next to Hyde park.

Annak ellenére, hogy a Holland Parkot Nyugat-London legbékésebb parkjaként tartják számon, valamilyen oknál fogva nagyon sok ideig teljesen elkerülte a figyelmemet. Végül egy hétvégén úgy döntöttem, hogy egy olyan parkba szeretnék menni, ahol még nem voltam, és ekkor tűnt fel a térképen egy kisebb zöld folt, közvetlenül a Hyde park szomszédságában.

The park has three major sections. The northern part is as overgrown as a secret forest, and the sun flares barely reach the walkway because of the thick greenery. The ruins of the Holland House surrounded with formal gardens and rich flowerbeds consist the central section of the park. The southernmost section is used for sport activities.

A parkban sétálva három, egymástól teljesen eltérő stílusú egység fedezhető fel. Az északi rész vadregényes, a növények mindent benőttek, teljesen megakadályozva, hogy a napsütés átszűrődjön a lombkoronákon. A középső részen találhatóak a Holland Ház romjai, körülötte gondosan kialakított kertekkel, és sokszínű virágágyásokkal. A park déli felében a sporté a főszerep.

For me the most exciting thing in the park is the peacock family living somewhere in the central area. You can hear them chatting and arguing everywhere, but during the day, when all the walkways are full of visitors, they prefer to hide, and you can only guess their location based on the squawk. If you are patient enough, you can find one or two, walking around very proudly, showing off their amazing feathers.

Számomra a park legizgalmasabb látványossága a középső részen tanyázó páva család. Vagy hát nem is család, mert ahhoz szerintem túl sokan vannak. No de a lényeg, hogy már a parkba belépve hallani lehet a pávák jellegzetes hangját, ahogyan egymással beszélgetnek, vitatkoznak. Nap közben, mikor sok a látogató, a pávák előszeretettel rejtőzködnek, és csak sejteni lehet, honnan jön a rikácsolás. Ha az ember kitartóan keresgél, rábukkanhat egy-két egyedre, amint az büszkén, és fütyülve az egész világra sétál, illetve a tollaival ékeskedik.

No meg bizalmatlanul megfigyeli az embert.

When it’s time to close the park (yes, the parks are closed in London for the night), and most people slowly go home, the peacocks take over control. This means, that suddenly all of them come out from their hideaways, occupy the walkways, and if they find lost people, ruthlessly surround them and start demanding food:

Peacock 1: ‘Look guys, there’s a human!’
Peacock 2: ‘Maybe he has some food. I am bored of grass and worms. Let’s go there!’
Peacock 3: ‘Come closer! He has bread!’

Mikor elérkezik a zárás ideje (igen, Londonban a parkokat bezárják éjszakára), és az emberek szép lassan elszállingóznak, a pávák átveszik az uralmat. Ez abból áll, hogy mindannyian előjönnek a rejtekhelyeikről, befoglalják a sétányokat, és ha mégis találnak eltévedt embert, kíméletlenül körülveszik és számonkérik rajta az ennivalót:

Páva 1: “Nézzétek srácok, ott egy ember!”
Páva 2: “Hátha van nála valami ennivaló, már unom a füvet és a kukacokat. Menjünk oda!”
Páva 3: “Gyertek! Van nála kenyér!”

Az összes páva: “Óóóó kenyééér!”

Peacock 2: ‘Give it to me, otherwise I will step on you!’

Páva 2: “Adod ide, vagy rádlépek?!”

As you can see, there is peacock dominion in this park, and once you get attacked, there is no mercy.

Szóval itt pávauralom van kéremszépen, és ha az embert egyszer támadás éri, ott nincs kegyelem.

They were over the moon beacuse of the seeded bread, but since their absolute favourite food is corn, next time I will make sure I have some.

Amint láthatjátok, rettenetesen örültek a magvas kenyérnek, de mivel a kedvenc csemegéjük a kukorica, legközelebb azzal térünk vissza.

Oh and professional conclusion: it is extremely difficult to end up with usable peacock pictures in the gloom, because the peacocks – after being lazy all day long – become extremely energetic by that time of the day, and the lighting conditions aren’t on your side either, so it is extremely rare to catch a moment where the bird is not just a blurred blue patch.

Ja és a szakmai tanulság: borzasztó nehéz félhományban normális pávafotót lőni, ugyanis a fényviszonyok eleve nem előnyösek, mindemellett a pávák az egész napos ejtőzés után hihetetlen energiával nyüzsögnek, így elég ritka az olyan kép, aminek a középpontjában nem csak egy elmosódott kék folt áll.
