Wildlife Spotting: The Deer of Richmond Park

Every time I mentioned that I would really like to go to Richmond, Will’s answer was constantly pushing the limits of my non existing patience: ‘even though Richmond is stunning all year long, the very first time you see it should be in the summer’. After many weekends when I thought it is already summer enough and I really wanted to go and see the famous deer but I always got the same answer: ‘even though the weather is ALMOST perfect, we should wait a bit more’, one Friday evening he stood there with a huge grin on his face and said: ‘Tomorrow is supposed to be very hot. We are going to Richmond.’

Valahányszor szóba hoztam, hogy mostmár tényleg el kéne menni Richmondba, Will válasza mindig a nem létező türelmem határait feszegette: “ugyan Richmond egész évben gyönyörű, először mégiscsak nyáron kell látnod”. Így történt tehát, hogy több hétvégén keresztül (szerintem már egészen nyár volt) rendszeresen előhozakodtam a kérdéssel, hogy elmegyünk-e mostmár megnézni a szarvasokat, amire mindig az a válasz jött, hogy “az időjárás MAJDNEM jó, de még várjunk egy kicsit”. Végül egyik pénteken ragyogó arccal elém állt és közölte: “Holnap kánikula lesz. Megyünk Richmondba.”

Next morning, after an hour long journey, we reached the last stop of the green tube line, and I was closer to the deer than ever. To be honest, if I would have to associate animals to the different tube lines, the District line would definitely win the snail title. 🙂

Másnap reggel felkerekedtünk hát, majd röpke egyórás utazás után megérkeztünk a zöld metró szarvasokhoz közeli végállomásához. Mondjuk az is igaz, hogy ha a metróvonalakhoz állatokat kellene asszociálnom, akkor a District vonal minden bizonnyal a csigát nyerné meg. 🙂

Besides the fact that I was finally in Richmond, the other special element of the day is that this was the first time I was testing my grandparents’ 35mm film camera, a good old Russian Zenit-B which I brought back with me to London after I had been home a few weeks before. I wanted to try two different films that day: a black and white Ilford HP5 and a colour Agfa Precisa. For the colour one I chose the Xpro (cross processing) development technique, which means that the film is intentionally processed with the wrong chemicals to create interesting and unpredictable colour shifts and contrasts. Because I was playing around with the film camera, Will took over my DSLR.

Amellett hogy végre valahára eljutottunk Richmondba, a nap másik különlegessége az volt, hogy mikor legutóbb otthon jártam, lenyúltam nagyszüleim régi filmes fényképezőgépét (egy jó öreg orosz Zenit-B márkájú szerkentyűt), és elhatároztam hogy letesztelem mit tud. Két tekercs filmet szerettem volna aznap ellőni: egy fekete-fehér Ilford HP5-öt meg egy színes Agfa Precisa-t. A színeset keresztbehívás technikával hívattam elő, aminek az a lényege hogy a negatívot nem a megfelelő vegyszerbe teszik, hanem valami teljesen másba, és ezzel érdekes hatást érnek el. Mivel én a régi filmes gépet lengettem, Will átvette az irányítást a digitális fotóapparátom fölött.

We met the gang at the station and we decided to walk along the Thames path for a while. Richmond feels like a romantic little countryside town. It would never even cross my mind that it is actually part of London. The river is narrow and peaceful,

A megállóban találkoztunk a többiekkel majd a Temze felé vettük az irányt. Richmond olyan mint egy romantikus vidéki kisváros. Ha nem tudnám, eszembe sem jutna hogy London része. A Temze itt keskeny és békés,

while cheerful and talented musicians supply the tunes on the promenades.

We were sitting in the grass for a while enjoying the view (and taking photos of each other),

Egy ideig a fűben üldögéltünk, és gyönyörködtünk a látványban (meg egymást fotóztuk),

after which we continued our journey towards Richmond Gate, the entrance of the park. In order to get there we had to climb a rather steep hill, and if we consider the fact that it was a dog day, it’s no wonder that we were panting like our four legged friends.

majd elindultunk a park bejárata (Richmond Gate) felé. Célunk eléréséhez egy meglehetősen meredek dombot kellett leküzdeni, amihez ha hozzátesszük hogy tényleg kutya meleg volt, nem csoda hogy úgy lihegtünk mint valami lepusztult juhász ebek.

Will was right when he said that this place has to be seen during the summertime first. The contrast created by the hay-looking grass, the green trees, the blue sky and the fluffy white clouds (called sheep clouds in Hungarian) is absolutely magical.

Azt hiszem Willnek igaza volt, mikor azt mondta hogy ezt a helyet nyáron kell látni először, ugyanis valami egészen varázslatos látvány a már-már szénává égett fű, a zöld lombkoronák, a kék ég és a közelben leselkedő hófehér bárányfelhők kontrasztja.

If you look at the opposite direction, instead of trees and clouds you can see trees and London.

Ha az ember az ellenkező irányba néz akkor a fák és felhők helyett fákat és Londont lát.

Because the park is huge, the deer won’t wait for you at the gate with a red carpet. You have to be patient and walk around quietly for a while in order to find them. Unfortunately, we weren’t lucky enough to see them right away. Instead of deer we only saw trees,

Mivel a park területe hatalmas, nem egészen úgy működik a dolog hogy a kapunál egyből lerohannak a szarvasok. Barangolni kell egy ideig türelmesen és lehetőleg csöndben. Sajnos nekünk sokáig nem volt szerencsénk. Szarvasok helyett csak fákat,

a lake,

tavat,

When we stopped for a moment to figure out a deer-finding plan,

They are not really afraid of people, but they definitely keep the distance. If you try to go a bit closer, they will run away and hide in the woods,

Alapvetően nem félnek az embertől, de azért betartják a tisztes távolságot. Ha valaki közeledni próbál, azon nyomban bemenekülnek a legközelebbi erdőbe,

after which they won’t cooperate with you anymore.

és további fotózásról természetesen szó sem lehet.

The long and tiring walk in the heat took all our energy away. Luckily, we found some benches on the top of the hill called Terrace Fields, where we could sit down, relax, enjoy the sunset and the view of the Thames, and drink ice-cold cider from the pub next to us. 🙂

A hosszú és fárasztó séta, meg persze a dögmeleg teljesen leszívta az energiánkat, így hát letelepedtünk a Terrace Fields nevű domb tetején található padokra, ahonnan a naplementét meg a Temzét bámultuk, miközben a közeli kocsmából szerzett cider-rel próbáltuk menteni a menthetőt. 🙂

Because it was Elena’s birthday, a caterpillar cake appeared from one of the backpacks. The moonlight wasn’t bright enough for us to cut and eat the cake, so we had to rely on modern technology. 🙂

Mivel aznap volt Elena szülinapja, egyik hátizsákból előkerült egy – azt hiszem – hernyó alakú, eredetileg gyerekeknek szánt torta, aminek a felszeleteléséhez és elfogyasztásához a holdfény már nem volt elegendő. 🙂
