The Cats of Bangkok – Guest Post by William

When visiting Thailand last year, it was my third time in Asia. From what I’ve seen during that trip along with my time in Japan and also everything you can research online – you come to the conclusion that the treatment of animals and wildlife is a very mixed bag across Asia.

A tavalyi thaiföldi út volt a harmadik alkalom, hogy ellátogattam Ázsiába. Azok alapján amit Japánban láttam, meg amit az interneten is olvasni lehet, arra a következtetésre jutottam, hogy az állatokkal való bánásmód nagyon megoszlik ezen a földrészen.

It’s a mixed bag as yes, there are lots and lots of things that definitely need to be improved, which are being quite widely reported and addressed. These include riding on elephants and petting tigers in temples if you’re a tourist, and utter non-sense such as the use of animal products like bear bile in China for medicine purposes.

Megoszlik olyan értelemben, hogy rengeteg dolog változtatásra szorul, mint például az elefántok meglovaglása vagy a tigrisek ölelgetése a hírhedt tigris-templomokban. Az efféle turistabolondító fogások mellett Kínában mind a mai napig hisznek abban az ostobaságban, hogy állatok testrészei és szervei (például a medve epéje) sikeresen felhasználhatóak az orvoslásban.

But to think that all of Asia is doom and gloom for animals is a common stereotype, as it’s not entirely the case. There are many people of care for the well being of the animals that surround them, and there are lots of different and interesting ways that animals and people are co-existing.

Ugyanakkor az a gondolat, hogy az állatok sorsa Ázsiában sanyarú, szerencsére csak sztereotípia és nem egészen igaz. Az emberek többsége fontosnak tartja a saját környezetében élő állatok jólétét, így aztán állat és ember kapcsolatának rengeteg különböző és nagyon érdekes megnyilvánulását figyelhettük meg.

Which brings us to the Cats of Bangkok.

Lássuk, hogyan is működik ez a bangkoki macskák esetében.

In Thailand, as with other parts of the world, lots of people love cats and dogs. The unfortunate thing about loving cats and dogs in a relatively third world country is you’ll find a lot of people end up not being able to afford to look after their pets, so they end of on their own.

A világ más részeihez hasonlóan az emberek Thaiföldön is imádják a kutyákat, macskákat. Csak az a szomorú, hogy egy majdhogynem harmadik világba tartozó országban az emberek sajnos nem tudják megengedni maguknak azt a luxust, hogy megfelelően gondoskodjanak a jószágaikról. Így aztán azok többnyire magukra maradnak.

In the case of cats, it all seems to work quite well. They are very independent creatures, they will always find food, and they certainly find a lot of attention from the many people around them.

A macskák esetében ez egészen jól működik. Mivel nagyon önállóak, mindig megoldják hogy valamilyen módon táplálékhoz illetve a környezetükben tartózkodó emberek figyelméhez jussanak.

This sleepy little cat was pretty much the hostel guard where we stayed. Greeting us with plenty of happy meows, this gentle and highly affectionate creature happily lived outside of the hostel. Having been fed by us with some canned tuna, or by any of the hostel staff, he would happily sit next to us each evening as we had beer. Of course, he would claim a seat for himself:

Ő volt a hotelünk házörzője, és annak ellenére, hogy az épületen kívül éldegélt, mindig mindenkit vidáman nyávogva köszöntött. Étel is bőségesen jutott neki. Vagy a hotel dolgozói gondoskodtak róla, vagy pedig tőlünk kuncsorgott egy kis tonhal konzervet. Ilyenkor aztán velünk töltötte az estét, és míg mi odakint söröztünk, ő egy széken heverészett:

But that’s just the beginning. Venture a little further, and you’ll find a cat or two shopping in a local store:

És ez csak a kezdet. Tovább kalandozva az ember mindig belebotlik egy-két macskába a boltokban:

Then, each and every minute, of every part of Bangkok, you’ll make friends everywhere. And they all want their picture taken:

Aztán pedig minden egyes pillanatban, Bangkok minden lehetséges szögletében össze lehet barátkozni egy-egy négylábúval. Persze mindegyik szeretne egy saját profilképet:

Come out for some food (of course!):

Olykor előjönnek enni:

Have a drink:

Have a laze around:

They are often posing watching you:

Gyakran pózolnak és közben alaposan szemügyre vesznek:

Or just curious as to who you are:

Looking for things in unreachable places:

Everywhere you go, the cats are watching:

Akármerre mész, a macskák mindig nyomon követnek:

And they hang out with the kids:

Vagy a kölykeikkel lógnak:

Quite often they want to look into your bag, and then stare at something random:

Gyakran kíváncsiak a táskád tartalmára, majd elméláznak:

But most important of all, they sit and watch the city at night, protecting it:

De ami a legfontosabb, az éj leple alatt ők figyelik és őrzik a várost:

I was always stopping and talking to the cats. If Csilla, Ash or Orsi would lose me, they knew it would be cat related. 🙂

Én állandóan megálltam beszélgetni velük, így aztán valahányszor Csilla, Ash vagy Orsi szem elől veszítettek, mindig tudták hogy macska van a dologban. 🙂
