Exploring Canterbury
Let’s jump back in time till march this year. It was a beautiful, mainly sunny spring weekend, when Will and I decided to visit Canterbury. We heard a lot about the importance of this place from both historical and religious point of view (Canterbury Cathedral, Archbishop of Canterbury), but neither of us had been here before. This is why it was about time to pay a visit.

Colchester or Coldchester?
My friends and I chose a cold January Saturday as a milestone for leaving behind the big Christmas and New Year’s alcohol coma and continue our ‘exploring the British towns’ project. If I remember correctly, it was Caroline’s idea to go and check out Colchester, a place I’ve never heard of before and I had no idea if there is anything interesting to see. Now I can tell you: there is. Colchester is not just Britain’s oldest roman town, but theoretically it is considered to be Britain’s oldest town, period. This fact suggests that visitors will find lots of historical buildings, ruins and and other curiosities here. A nagy karácsonyi és újévi…

Going Underground: Jubilee Line at Charing Cross Station
It is a well-known fact, that London has a serious tube and tunnel system, and many parts of it are disused and abandoned. Over time more and more tube lines were constructed, extended, transformed, moved, and sometimes closed. Usually people are not allowed to visit these places, but sometimes the London Transport Museum opens them for a short period of time, so the most curious Londoners have a chance to get an insight.

Wildlife Spotting: London Zoo Sunset Safari
Ok, so if someone invites me to go anywhere, where I can see some animals, I can’t and won’t say no. This wasn’t any different, when Giulia found out that during the summer months London Zoo organizes an event called Sunset Safari, which means, that on every Friday – after the opening hours – the zoo reopens for the (theoretically) adults, to enjoy some food, (alcoholic) drinks, and wildlife. So we quickly got some tickets, and on a sunny Friday afternoon we went to discover the unknown.

Wildlife Spotting: Peacocks
Despite the fact that Holland Park is considered to be West-London’s most peaceful park, for an embarrassingly long time I didn’t even realise it’s there. Then one weekend I decided to explore a park I haven’t been to before, and that was the moment when I caught a glimpse of a small green area on the map, right next to Hyde park.

The White Cliffs of Beachy Head
I reached the point when an early morning at Victoria station feels like home: I spot people right away in front of WHSmith, buying the train tickets and journey treats feels like an old routine, after which we jump on the train to head towards an unknown destination. This time we chose to visit Beachy Head. Már egészen otthonosan érzem magam kora reggel a Victoria pályaudvaron, egyből észreveszem az embereket a megszokott találkahelyen, rutinosan járulunk a jegy-automata elé amit általában gyors kaja vásárlás követ, – csak hogy formában tartsuk a rágó izmainkat -, majd pattanunk is fel a vonatra. Ezúttal Beachy Head volt az úticél.

The Haunted Epping Forest
I can spend hours just looking at Google Maps, and – based on the green and blue patches – trying to decide which park should be the next one to explore. When that’s done, and weekend comes – and by that time I am very tired and I should sleep really -, I get depressed if I don’t leave my flat shortly after opening my eyes. During one of these Google Maps sessions a huge green patch positioned in North-East London caught my attention. The name of that huge green patch is Epping forest. Since the last stop of the Central (Heating) tube line is Epping – which is in zone 6,…

Masquerading
Another strange fact about me is that I really enjoy walking around on the streets in a very eye-catching dress or costume and watching people’s reactions when they see me. Usually they only stare at you when they think it can’t be seen, but in case you look straight into their eyes, they will look away. Some of them will smile and start wondering what are your plans for the evening, if they are brave enough, they will even ask, but most of them will pretend they didn’t see you. Observing social behaviour in different cultures is an extremely entertaining activity.

The Secrets of Arundel Castle
I am not a morning person, but when it comes to meeting people at one of the train stations, and getting a good cup of coffee while waiting for our train, I can jump out of the bed and get ready in just a few moments. Train stations in general have that special atmosphere made of all the journey possibilities, and people’s excitement. Anyway, it was Monday morning, 8AM, and I was on my way to meet Red, Iza, and Will because we wanted to explore Arundel Castle.

Canalway Cavalcade
As I mentioned in the previous episode, we were enjoying our sunny Sunday afternoon with cream tea and a photogenic cat, when Caroline called us saying that there is this boat festival in Little Venice, and they are already there. What’s the reaction of a responsible wayfarer in such a situation? “Let’s go”, of course. How does a responsible wayfarer change location? On foot, of course. Ok, there was a little bit of tube cheating there, because we took the Northern line to Camden Town, but then we decided to walk all the way along the canal to see the Canalway Cavalcade.
